The SLI Korean language course, under the aegis of the Sungkyun Language Institute (SLI) was established to teach Korean and to meet all your needs in Korea in 1996. Since then approximately 7,000 foreigners who came to study the Korean Language and Korean culture have completed this course and currently the average of 220-250 students per semester are enrolling in our Korean language course. It has been recognized for its successful educational result for which our qualified instructors, various textbooks, and interesting classes take credit
High-qualified instructors and curriculums
The SLI Korean Language course is well known for its experienced instructors - approximately 20 of them - who were educated and trained in teaching korean as a foreign language. The curriculum and content of the lectures are carefully devised and managed by the instructors. In addtion, instructors are eager to help the students who have problems related to their studies or life in Korea.
Excellent textbooks
We use Easy to learn Korean 1-6 and Easy to speak Korean 1-10 devised by our own lecturers as the teaching material. They have very good reputations and been used as textbooks in 14 universities in Korea and exported to China and Thailand, too.
Friends - Volunteers
Friends , a voluntary student organization, consists of more than 100 students at Sungkyunkwan University. The organization is aimed to foster language and culture exchange between international students and our students. The "Friends" students always do their best to help their int'l students accommodate to the campus life. Int'l students may find it helpful to have some Korean friends to guide and help them during their stay in Korea.
Regular course
This course is suitable for learners, who can spare their morning hours, aiming to learn Korean language intensively for a lengthy period.
Classes are organized according to the level of proficiency ranging from level one to level six. We offer regular Korean language course quarterly (Spring, summer, fall and winter). Each course runs for 10 weeks. Monday through Friday (09:00~13:00), and total of 200 hours.

Location
SLI is located on the Sungkyunkwan University's Humanities and Social Sciences Campus, which is situated in the heart of Seoul near Daehakro. As the cultural, economic, and political center of Korea, Seoul provides infinite opportunities for foreign students. Students can benefit from the city's rich resources, and are able to put into practice what they have learned in the classroom. In particular, Daehakro, a lively arts, theaters, music, and restaurant quarter in Seoul, provides an exciting environment for student life. Another great place for students to go to is Insa-dong, a 400 meter-long street lined with traditional tea shops, art galleries, antique shops, restaurants and ceramic dealers, where students can witness both traditional and modern Korea.
Curriculum
Level 1: Elementary Level
Korean alphabet and basic structures
Basic sentence structure with survival conversation
Identify basic honorifics and others
Basic communicative functions(Greet your friends; how to go shopping; how to use public transportation; how to order a meal, and other useful general expressions)
Level 2: High-Elementary Level
Study loan words; imitative words basic irregular inflected predicates
Simple compound and complex sentences by coordinate conjunctions
Able to communicate elementarily with Korean (Suggestion; request; order an item by phone; cook food; open a bank account; make a reservation, etc)
Level 3: Intermediate Level
Understand various written forms
Read 1000-letter paragraphs and compose a designated style
Able to present about social issues such as Korean culture, thoughts, and customs
Level 4: High-Intermediate Level
Reading and writing with pragmatics
Abstract words and sociable language
Partially used Chinese characters and learn sayings and proverbs
Able to express feelings and read short literary works
Business and social relationship
Cultural activities(drama, movies, newspaper, participation in debates)
Level 5: Advanced Level
Study frequently used abstract words, slang and specialized words
Able to summarize what was told and read
Able to express feelings and opinions of current social issues
Partially able to take college level lectures
Complex social language use(business, professional areas, college lectures, media language, etc)
Level 6: High-Advanced Level
Understand profound meanings in pragmatics and surface/deep structures
Able to speak fluently about unfamiliar subjects
Fostering socio-linguistic competence
Talking about comprehensive and general issues
Socio-linguistic and strategic communication
Certificate
Students who successfully completed Level 6, or at least three consecutive terms, are awarded "The Certificate of Completion".
Special Classes
College Entrance Exam Preparation Class: Students who are in the Level 4 and above are eligible to take
TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean ) Preparation Class
Korean Music Class: Learning Korean culture as well as language through Korean songs
Advanced Writing Class: Intensive writing class to improve composition skills
Korean Film Class: A practical way to learn Korean through Korean movies
Pronunciation class
Listening class(including current issues and events)
Volunteer Students Friends as Helpers
'Friends' is a voluntary organization consisting of more than one hundred students here at Sungkyunkwan University.
This organization aims to bring about and exchange languages and culture as well as cooperation between international students and SKKU students. They always do their best to take care of international students' school life and life in Korea.
Every international student can be matched with one or two Korean students if they desire. International students may find it helpful to have some Korean friends to guide and advise them during their stay in Korea. It is, of course, also an excellent opportunity to make friends!
Korean Culture Program
To learn more about Korean traditional culture, students will be introduced to the following:
- Talch'um (Korean mask dance)
- Taekwondo (Korean martial arts)
- Traditional marriage ceremony
- Jaerae (Traditional Korean thanksgiving ceremony for ancestors)
- Samulnori (Traditional Korean percussion music)

Field trips may include excursions to: Downtown Seoul including broadcasting stations Chungwadae (the president's house), Insa-dong, Daehak-ro, Ichon Pottery Village, and amusement parks such as Everland and Lotte World
School Facilities(All students will be issued a student ID card)
Library, multi-media labs, PC rooms, gym (fee involved), canteen and many other facilities
- Students also have the opportunity to meet former students of the SLI who now attend universities in Korea. This is a great opportunity to
  exchange information.
- Students can get a 30% discount for joining other language courses in our institute.
