SKKU, Won the 2020 AI Excellence Awards

As a rapid increase of demand for artificial intelligence (AI) talents, the government has started to support the establishment of graduate schools specializing in AI to develop AI talents. Sungkyunkwan University’s Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence also opened in November 2019 with the aim of training 300 talents for five years.

In 2020, the first year of establishment, SKKU’s Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence made significant achievements, including winning the Grande Challenge for Artificial Intelligence (R&D), topping the Biz Drone Challenge in object detection area, and ranking second in image classification in Korea Health Datathon.

The expected AI talents that SKKU fosters is clear. It’s a talent who aims to realize MEGA AI rather than a simple development of AI.

Currently, machine learning AI is based on learning, so it is difficult to apply it to areas that have not been learned. SKKU’s Graduate School of AI aimed at MEGA AI for talented people who develop AI beyond the limits. With the same reason, hardware is included in the curriculum.

They are operating an autonomous research program to encourage AI development that can be used in the industrial field. As of 2020, 34 teams are active. The school plans to provide opportunities for students to gain work experience through internship programs.
