The “2021 Winter Vacation IoT Specialized Practical Education” held for five days from January 4 (Mon) to January 8 (Fri). As the social distancing level was raised to Level 2.5 due to the COVID-19, the program was held online and all the educational kits were delivered to students so that they could practice individually. This event was hosted by AI•IoT Education Support Center (College of Information and Communication Engineering) and was supported by Research & Business Foundation. The center plans to provide AI practical education, which is an education that strengthens the content of practice that is lacking in the subject, for next summer vacation.

About 40 students from Natural Sciences Campus participated in the practical education. It was originally planned for 20 students at College of Information and Communication Engineering, but the number of students were increased due to the great response and request from other students.

At the opening ceremony, Prof. Yong-Seok Kim (Director of the AI•IoT Education Support Center) emphasized that the technical definition, importance, and applications of IoT and example cases of IoT. He also stressed that there would be difficulties since it was conducted as online, but if students focus on the education and other tasks, they would learn a lot.

At the final presentation of the project, Prof. Jung-Rae Kim (IoT Chief Professor at the AI•IoT Education Support Center) praised the various and ingenious projects presented by students. He also said, “This education was a great opportunity to recognize and implement a single system, including hardware/software, to solve the problems around us.”

The students participated in the education learned about ‘analogue/digital sensors’, ‘Android App’ and ‘Google Cloud’ for three days, and started their own project based on what they learned on the 4th~5th days. They came up with a variety of interesting ideas and implemented them, including smart home butlers, smart gardener, smart electric blanket, temperature control gas stove, smart fish tank, connecting table, library seat system, working out at home system, and smart snow blower, etc.

Students said that it was a great opportunity to develop IoT device themselves even though it was a short period of time. Meanwhile, some mentioned that it would have been better to have an offline education as it was a practical education.
