2021 Extra-curricular Program <Convergence Education for Humanities> by College of Confucian Studies & Eastern Philosophy is Successfully Completed

College of Confucian Studies & Eastern Philosophy (Dean Shin, Jeongeun) prepared an online extra-curricular program <Convergence Education for Humanities> for registered students and conducted the program for the winter break via i-Campus from January 25(Mon) to February (Fri).

In an era where interdisciplinary and convergence studies are emphasized, “Digital Humanities”, which conducts intellectual activities such as research on humanities and related education in a new way with help of information and communication technology, is emerging as an important value in humanities research. Hence, the College of Confucian Studies & Eastern Philosophy has prepared a time to discuss about what digital humanities are and what kinds of research and contents can be developed by students studying humanities using digital technology.

Through this program, students could hear the stories of various people who are currently active in each field of digital humanities and content development. In addition to online lectures, students have also applied what they learned through group projects. 40 out of 70 students participated in group projects and they formed a total of 10 groups with 4 members each. For the first week, interim presentation was made on Friday through online and the final presentation was made on second week of Friday. Various research topics using novel and relevant data and methodologies were announced to suit the theme of “convergence”, and four teams were selected as winners after a fierce competition.

The participated students said that they could have earned practical knowledge how to converge knowledges from different fields such as “humanities” and “engineering”. They also said that they were able to access the latest research topics related to digital humanities that were not available in undergraduate classes, and to develop research topics through feedbacks from team members and instructors.

The award ceremony was held at the office of dean (College of Confucian Studies & Eastern Philosophy) and it was attended by Prof. Kim Do-il, Park So-jeong, and Kang Kyung-hyun on February 22(Mon). Prof. Park So-jeong who planned the program said that “I was surprised that not only students from the department of Confucian Studies & Eastern Philosophy but also from many other departments participated in this program. And I was very impressed by the results of the two-week period, which made me difficult to choose winners. It was meaningful time to feel students’ passion and enthusiasm in humanities convergence education regardless of their majors.”
