Reopened Museum Culture Experience – July 9th (Sat)

British Contemporary Art Master_ Michael Craig-Martin Exhibition

Faculty and staff cultural events with the museum

  • Opportunity to see British contemporary art at Hangaram Art Museum, Seoul Arts Center

Entering the post-COVID-19 era, the SKKU Museum (Director Hwan Cho) cultural experience event, which has been suspended for the past two years, will resume. The museum’s cultural experience, which opened last month with the Bukchon Culture and Arts Tour, will visit the Hangaram Art Museum of the Seoul Arts Center, where the exhibition of Michael Craig-Martin (b. 1941), a master of British modern art, will be held. Craig-Martin, considered a pioneer of conceptual art, was a professor at Goldsmiths, University in London from the 1970s to the 1980s and worked with ‘Young British Artists’ (yBas) such as Damien Hirst, Julian Opie, Sarah Lucas, Gary Hume, and Tracey Emin. He is a nurtured teacher and an artist praised as the godfather of modern art.

This exhibition is filled with a total of 150 works, from his early 1970s works to his latest works in 2021, and the iconic work of conceptual art, ‘An Oak Tree (1973)’, was unveiled for the first time in Asia, drawing public attention. In particular, wall-painting works that will fill the digital portrait, special engraving, and lobby produced for the Korean exhibition are also special attractions for this exhibition. The exhibition consists of a total of 6 themes. Part 1 Exploration, Part 2 Language, Part 3 Ordinariness, Part 4 Play, Part 5 Fragment, and Part 6 Combination.

The work of drawing concepts in lines and colors begins with a question of the nature of art. While attending Yale University, he founded modern art histories such as Dadaism, minimalism, and pop art, which were part of the history that flourished in the 1960s. What attracts us is an artificial product rather than ‘nature’. He prefers to use industrial products commonly used in daily life as an object rather than the landscape of the garden. He thought that it is closer to the essence of life to look into everyday objects that may be overlooked and to understand the properties of ordinary objects around them. It is aesthetically expressing that our daily life itself can be shaken without these things in life. We hope that you will encounter refreshing and sophisticated exhibitions through the high-quality cultural tour provided by the museum.
