A Research Team (Smart Factory Track) from Department of Industrial Engineering Made a Splendid Achievement of Winning Two Awards

A research team (Smart Factory Track) from the Department of Industrial Engineering won the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy minister’s award and the Korea Productivity Center Chair’s award at the 2020 Smart Factory Essay-Writing Contest. The team also received another Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy minister’s award at the Project Competition which is organized with an aim to cultivate professionals of smart factory’s operation and design.

In particular, the minister’s award for the Smart Factory Essay-writing Contest is the second consecutive win following 2019. At the contest, a paper titled <A Study on the Digital Twin Visualization Method for Smart Factory of Dye Processing Industry> by Hyeon Chan Kim, Yoo Ho Son, student Jihyun Bae, Sang Do Noh was selected as the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy minister’s award.

This paper proposes research on the visualization of CPS and DT for introduction of Smart Factories to dyeing and finishing industry. For this research, we progressed research on suitable visualization methods for decision-making of workers by conducting an AHP experiment. Also, the AHP method was applied to analyze DT visualization for CPS about various visualization techniques centered on visibility, usefulness, and convenience.

Additionally, a paper titled <A Flexible Jig for Reconfigurable and Flexible Assembly of Smart Factory> written by Jinho Yang, Yoo Ho Son, Donggun Lee, Sang Do Noh, Hyeonnam Kim, Jong Su Lee, Young Soo Kim, Youngkyu Won, was selected as the Korea Productivity Center Chair’s award. In this paper, as a part of constructing a reconfigurable and flexible assembly of smart factory, the flexible jig which can be applied universally to the production of various vehicle door trims in different shapes is proposed. Also, on a trial basis, it is applied to the reconfigurable and flexible assembly lines of smart factory for verifying the responsiveness of the reconfigurable jig tools to product changes. It was highly praised for its practical research conducted in close industry-academic cooperation with schools, manufacturing companies, and solution companies.

Moreover, a project titled <Generation and Fault Prediction of Simulated-based Virtual Data for Digital Twin> by Moon-sik Kang, Jae-ho Kim, Hyun-chan Kim, Hee-young Park, Ah-rim Shim, Seok-ho Kang, Dae-il Kwon, Sang Do Noh, Jong-seok Lee, Dong-joon Lim was selected as the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy minister’s award at the competition of project to cultivate professionals of smart factory’s operation and design.

In this project, OPC UA technology which was thought by a ‘Demo Factory IIoT System and Practice’ class was utilized, a communication environment between virtual simulation environment and facility control programs was built, data of welding robot’s joint was collected, and a system that predicts products’ defects through AI technology was designed and implemented.

The Smart Factory Essay-Writing Contests and the Project Competition are held annually to expand the research base on core technology of smart factory and advanced technology of its operation and design, sponsored by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
