SKKU has announced that Professor Sungwoong KIM’s research team developed a new two-dimensional new material that does not exist in the nature. This research was conducted under the sponsorship of Ministry of Science and ICT and National Research Foundation of Korea’s project (No.2015M3D1A1070639) and Basic Science Institute (IBS-R011-D1). It has been posted on one of world renowned journal, Science Advances (IF=12.804).

The research team alloyed alkali metal thatcan authorize excess electron on three-dimensional crystal structure materialto convert it into two-dimensional layer structure. Then they removed the positive ion from the alkali metal and developed technology that can freely structure the dimension of crystal structure.

Using this technology, the team was successful in creating two-dimensional layer structure material from the pseudo-binary compound and raised the possibility in creating new two-dimensional material similar or better than graphene.

Professor Sungwoong KIM said, “We were able to discover various two-dimensional materials such as graphene by using the idea to chemically inject electron on top of the classic research method.”

Prof. KIM is currently performing researches to discover the world’s first or world’s best material.
