(Daejeon=Yonhap News) Reporter Yoo Eui Joo = New anticancer compound that suppresses lung cancer and prostate cancer’s cell proliferation from hallucination inducing poisonous mushroom Gymnopilus spectabilis (Fr.) Singer has been found.

It has been revealed that this has been found through co-research done by Korea Forest Service Korea Forest Research Institute’s Forest Mushroom Research Laboratory alongside with Sungkyunkwan University’s School of Pharmacy Professor Kim Ki Hyun’s research team.

The co-research team found sesquiterpenes from Gymnopilus spectabilis (Fr.) Singer’s extract.

It showed very similar effects to doxorubicin which is an anticancer drug widely used, so new natural anticancer therapy is anticipated.

Gymnopilus spectabilis (Fr.) Singer is a deadly poisonous mushroom that requires mch caution when collecting in the wild for it can cause mental anxiety, cognitive disorder, aggressive behavior etc. after consumption within 30 minutes.

This research result has been recently published in international journal of pharmacology “Archives of Pharmaceutical Research, IF 2.49” 43rd edition.

Kim Man-Jo, Korea Forest Research Institute Director of Forest Income Resources Research Division, said: “Mushrooms are gaining attraction as the new medical material, we will expand the research to lead high value bio industry.”
