The First Autonomous Driving SW Competition in 2023, Hosted by Sungkyunkwan University

The Future Electric Vehicle Technology Convergence and Innovation Talent Development Team (led by Director Jeon Jae-wook) held the First Autonomous Driving SW Competition at the Natural Sciences Campus Semiconductor Building on July 21st (Friday), 2023.

This competition was organized as part of a project to foster the talents required for the future autonomous driving car industry by providing university students from various majors such as Electronics and Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, SW Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Semiconductors, and Industrial Engineering with research opportunities related to autonomous driving and enhancing the SW capabilities demanded by the industry. A total of 19 teams participated in the competition, mainly composed of students applying for the Future Electric Vehicle Microdegree program, and they competed in autonomous driving SW technology.

Each participating team attached cameras, LiDAR, and ultrasonic sensors to electric toy cars and developed autonomous driving SW technology to design and implement their own autonomous driving vehicles. The implemented autonomous vehicles performed given driving missions and competed against each other.

The judging panel for this competition consisted of professors and industry experts from our university and current industries, including △Professor Hwang Sung-ho from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, △Professor Park Eun-byung from the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, △Yoon Jang-yeol, Sector Leader at △Hyundai Mobis, Im Joon-chae, Team Leader at Hyundai NGV, △Han Seung-gu, Manager at HL Klemove, and △Director Im Yong-gyu from Pasteck. They evaluated the teams based on the specified competition rules and awarded a total of seven prizes, including the President's Award and the School of Information and Communication Dean's Award. The President's Award, the highest honor, was given to "Development Team 1" (Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, Park Jun-hyeok, Lee Jae-in, Jung Ye-chan).

Director Jeon Jae-wook, who supervised the competition, introduced it as a contest where students from various fields, such as Electronics and Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, SW Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Semiconductors, and Industrial Engineering, design autonomous driving cars by attaching cameras, LiDAR, and ultrasonic sensors to electric toy cars through exchanges and collaborations among students. He expressed his hope that the competition would serve as an opportunity to enhance students' autonomous driving SW development capabilities and cultivate advanced professionals needed in the automotive industry."
