Sungkyunkwan University collaborates with the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) and industry for the development of talent in advanced industries

Our university announced on the 9th that it held an industry-academic meeting with KIAT and semiconductor industry representatives on the 8th at the Natural Sciences Campus in Suwon to foster talent in advanced fields.

The event was attended by Ji-beom Yoo, President of Sungkyunkwan University, KIAT President Byeong-joo Min, Industry Cooperation Division Director Dong-cheol Byun, as well as representatives from semiconductor companies such as Samsung Electronics, Applied Materials Korea, Wonik IPS, and Abov Semiconductor. They exchanged various opinions on cultivating talent in advanced fields, including semiconductors.

Participants expressed empathy for the challenges in the supply of skilled manpower in advanced industries due to a decrease in the domestic student population and the education gap between universities and companies. They emphasized the need for active government support to cultivate and secure high-quality talent. In particular, they proposed close collaboration between companies and universities to expand practical education programs based on industry demand, ensuring that students acquire the latest technology and practical knowledge.

Sungkyunkwan University has been consistently making efforts to cultivate talent in the semiconductor industry, a core asset for national security and technological sovereignty since it established the world's first contract major for semiconductor talent in 2006. Especially in 2023, it demonstrated its strength by being the only university in the country to secure all three government financial support projects for the semiconductor field.

President Yoo stated, "Based on the expertise Sungkyunkwan University has accumulated in cultivating semiconductor talent, we will continue to work tirelessly to produce workers for the semiconductor industry. Through interdisciplinary majors, convergence tracks, micro degrees, and various integrated education programs, we aim not only to break down barriers for engineering students but also to cultivate talent for the semiconductor industry, extending to natural science and even liberal arts students."
