SKKU AEAS’s Chair Professor Walraven’s Fourth Special Lecture

 

  - Fourth Special Lecture on December 6
  - Tracks Origin of East Asia Studies in Europe

Professor Walraven from Lieden University, Holland, who was appointed last September as chair professor by Academy of East Asian Studies (AEAS, Director Seung-Woon Shin), SungKyunKwan University (SKKU), held his first special lecture last September on the topic ‘Multiculturalism from in European Perspective.’ Professor Walraven is gaining more and more attention as it reaches its fourth special lecture.

Walraven’s fourth lecture was held on December 6 (Thu) 15:00pm under the theme ‘Lyrics, Communication and Public Opinion.’ The Lecture was followed by a panel discussion and general discussion. Part II of the lecture was conducted on October 19 under the subject ‘Europe East Asian Studies Journal.’
Walraven’s third Special Lecture was held on November 29 in the 600th Anniversary Hall third floor seminar room#3 from 4:30 to 6:00, for HK professor and SKKU professor under the theme of ‘East Asia Studies in Europe: Tradition of development and the emergence of the global discourse.’ This lecture was about finding the origin of East Asia Studies in Europe then discovering its subject complexity and observing the decrease of traditions in the midst of emerging national traditions and global trend. Also, the lecture overviews major journals and background of various European organizations. The lecture was followed by a 40 minute general discussion in English and Korean.

Born in New York America in 1947, Boudewjin C.A. Walraven received a doctor’s degree in Korean Studies from the Lieden University. He was then employed by the same university as a Korean Studies professor since 1994. He served as the president for the Academy of Korea Studies in Europe (AKSE) during 1995~ 1999 and was awarded a Bogwan Order of Cultural Merit from the Republic of Korea in 2003.
He was appointed last September as the chair professor of AEAS, SKKU, and editor-in-chief of AEAS international journal, AHCI. He published many books including ‘Songs of the Shaman : the Rithual Chants of the Korean Mudang'(1994), and ‘Korea in the Middle : Korean Studies and Area Studies.’
