Paul Johnson, the president of University of Western Australia(UWA) which is one of Group of 8(G8) universities in Australia, visited Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) on Nov.5(Thur), and discussed on ways to cooperate with SKKU and attended a  Student Exchange Agreement ceremony. With this agreement, it will be possible for a 5 student, student exchange program to be conducted every year from 2016 spring semester.

With UWA showing outstanding prominence in such fields like medicine where Nobel laureate Prof. Barry Marshall, who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, graduated from, it is expected that the president’s visit will give momentum to exchange cooperation with the Department of Medicine in SKKU. Also, the exchange of East Asian Studies is anticipated to become active with the Korean studies receiving more and more attention as the demand for Korean language surges in Western Australia.

This agreement is very meaningful in that the region of Western Australia where the university is located, is the economical driving force in Australia with vast deposits of natural resources, and in recent years seen a surge in interchange with Korea due to Korean companies like Samsung, LG and others settling there. Furthermore, as the recent agreement on establishing the ‘Australian Studies Center’ in SKKU made with the Australia-Korea Foundation was finalized, various fields of cooperation are expected to take shape with Australia through UWA.
