Sungdae Myeongnyun lecture by Professor Myron Scholes,

Nobel Laureate in Economics, Completed Successfully

SKKU, SKKU Alumni Association, Economics BK21 Education Research Group, and Sungkyun Nobel Prize Candidate Supporters held the 6th Sungdae Myeongnyun lecture by Nobel Laureate in Economics, professor Myron Scholes (Stanford University) on September 7.

This lecture began with a congratulatory speech by Chairman Joon Young Kim, who conducted a special scholarly conversation with Prof. Scholes alone to diagnose the Korean economy, and Prof. Dong-Ok Chah (Emeritus Professor of SKK Business School), Prof. Joonmo Cho (Executive Vice President of Humanities and Social Sciences Campus), Prof. Sunghyun Kim (Dean of College of Economics), Prof. Raunaq Pungaliya (Vice Dean of SKK GSB), students from College of Economics attended, and more than 600 audiences, including JoongAng Daily Newspaper, Korea Economic Journalist Corps and experts in the field of financial institutions, participated through online Zoom.

Although he is the founder of the Black-Scholes-Merton model, which is considered the most famous and mathematically beautiful model in finance, this lecture systematically summarized everything about finance without a single formula, considering all SKKU freshmen in HSSC. From classical topics such as Risk and ETF to recent topics such as ESG and financial innovation, as well as the concepts of Einstein and physics, he presented insightful prospects for the future of finance by covering artificial intelligence, fintech, blockchain, and big data convergence topics.

After the lecture, there were discussions with Prof. Scholes, Prof. Robert Webb (Research Distinguished Chair Professor at the University of Virginia), a senior researcher at SKKU Global Finance Research Center, and Prof. Jonathan Batten (RMIT, Editor-in-chief, Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money, SSCI), and questions from students, Dae Han Kim (Department of Economics), Jaemin Son (Department of Confucian and Oriental Studies).

Prof. Doo Jin Ryu (Department of Economics), who organized this Nobel laureate lecture series, said, “As shown in this special lecture, interdisciplinary barriers have been broken down, and interdisciplinary convergence can lead to prospects for the future and present innovative research. I think it would have inspired not only Business/Economy students but also Science/Engineering students. Prof. Scholes, who taught at Stanford University, University of Chicago, and MIT, was very impressed by the sharp and high-quality questions of SKKU students, saying “the questions were great and I enjoyed answering them as well!!” In the future, SKKU plans to continue to promote joint education and research with Nobel Laureates and overseas masters who are at the forefront of knowledge, including Prof. Scholes”.
